How to Conduct an Effective Job Safety Analysis

Safety and health add value to a business, a job and even a life. Conducting a job safety analysis (JSA) is one of the best ways of reducing accidents as well as preventing work-related illnesses.

What is A Job Safety Analysis?
Also known as a job hazard analysis (JHA), it is a procedure which focuses on job tasks as a way of identifying hazards before they even occur.

Common ApproachesĀ jsa
In order to effectively perform a job safety analysis, there are two common approaches that may be utilized:

1. Observation
The first approach involves observing a worker performing the particular job being evaluated for the JSA. The observer notes any potential hazards as the job is done step-by-step.

2. Team Effort
The second approach involves assembling a team of workers and supervisors who have ample experience on the job being analyzed. In this setting, the team brainstorms on the possible hazards and recommends the solutions to same.

The Process
There are four basic steps to conduct a JSA:

1. Selecting the job to be evaluated
2. Identifying the steps in performing the job
3. Identifying the potential hazards in each step
4. Identifying the solutions or actions to prevent or eliminate the hazard.

Identifying hazards and eliminating them as early as possible will help avert work-related accidents or even save a life.

When I needed scaffolding built up inside my house to install skylights, Canada Scaffold came to the rescue! From the first call with Kelly to the final take-down, their service was friendly, knowledgeable, humourous, and sincere. The installers were polite, courteous and clean. They called ahead of time so I was ready to great them and they made friends with my dog so he would stop barking! Would recommend them highly!
