Better Listener, Better Workplace

Posted on: December 24, 2014 Category: Safety, Safety Communication, Tags: listening skill, safety communication, workplace safety

The ability to listen well is one of the most important success factors in practically any job or career. But it’s especially critical in the construction setting, where communication failures — including poor listening — are a major contributing factor to errors that compromise people’s safety.

Listening is an active process wherein the listener focuses on what is being said while filtering out unrelated thoughts. It is one of the most important skill an effective worker could have, especially when training, discussions and instructions are an integral part of one’s daily tasks.

Businesses who give value to listening skills in the workplace will ensure progress of their companies. Below are key benefits in fostering this skill:

Congenial Relationships
Being heard is just as important as hearing someone out. Listening skills work both ways and focusing on what is being said promotes a sense of worth and positively motivates workers while employers reap increased level of trust and congenial relationships between workers and management.

Safer Workplace
Following instructions play a significant role in productivity and safety in the workplace. Workers with good listening skills are able to process important information at work, reducing mistakes and accidents.

Increased Production
When management and employees listen to each other and agree on how to accomplish tasks, the work is done much faster and more efficiently.

Concentrate on listening skills at work and the rewards will be priceless.
